I'll Shave my Head for $5,000 USD

Saturday, September 16, 2006

I, Eric Blom, decided early in 2006 that I was going to put in an extra effort this year to raise money for the Walk to D'Feet ALS, but, I didn't decide until September just what strategy to use. I'm putting in more from my own pocket this year, but, I want to see if even more money can be raised. So, here is my plan. If I raise $5,000 for the Walk to D'Feet ALS this year I will shave my head, and maintain it, till January 1st 2007. That is just 100 people donating less than $50 each. I say less than because I've already received $320 in contributions. And since your contributions are going directly  to the ALS Association they are tax deductible (check with your tax advisor and the ALS association for details). Of course contributions at any level help, so, please give what you can. From $10 to $5,000. Oh, and if there is one angle out there that wants to contribute $5K while the rest of you will be off the hook I will not be!

Now you are probably thinking this is just a gimmick and you are not going to get anything out of it. Not so, I will shave my head and you will get something out of it. Depending on where you know me from you will get an on going experience for the rest of 2006 if you help me raise $5,000 for the Walk to D'Feet ALS in 2006. Check out the following categories to see what I have in mind.

PIAP.com: This is where I post all of my photos from various events and trips. No doubt shaving my head will be an event. So, you can be sure that there will be a full photo essay at PIAP.com for you to see the shocking transformation step by step. Of course there will be intermittent photos though the rest of the year to enjoy too.

PSoCDeveloper.com: Most of my PSoCDeveloper friends at using the forums where we have avatars for our accounts. Mine is currently Agent Smith from the Matrix. If you help me raise $5,000 for the Walk to D'Feet ALS in 2006 I'll be changing my avatar to a new portrait of me with a shaved head for the rest of 2006.

Cypress Semiconductor: Cypress is a big company and just like any big organization it needs a phone book. Well, the Cypress phone book also has photos. If you help me raise $5,000 for the Walk to D'Feet ALS in 2006 I'll replace my current photo in the Cypress Phone Book with a new portrait of me with a shaved head for the rest of 2006.

Family and Friends:
Keeping a shaved head for a guy that has always had hair longer than 1/2 inch is going to be a challenge and a shock especially through October, November, and December with all of those holidays. You will be seeing me at Holleween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years with a first ever look if you help me raise $5,000 for the Walk to D'Feet ALS in 2006.

I realize this is a aggressive goal. Which means two things. First I don't want to part with my hair and second I feel strongly about supporting ALS research and families effected by ALS. As I have, some of you may have other Degenerative Neurological Diseases that have touched your life. Such as, Parkinson's, Alzimers, and Mulsklu Solorus. While I'm not a doctor or an expert on any of these diseases I'm hopeful that research into ALS will help those afflicted by any degenerative neurological disease in some way.
